It's no secret that the 'Sonic The Hedgehog' franchise has been dragged through the mud, aside from a few recent gems (Colors and sections of Unleashed) most people don't give the blue blur the time of day. Come November this is going to change, Sonic Generations is a title celebrating 20 wonderful years of Sonic and in a busy video-game packed month, this title matters the most out of them all.
How's this? Well, Modern Warfare could be a digital shit out of Infinity Ward's ass and still sell trunk loads. Uncharted 3 will be riding on the coat-tails if the exceptional Uncharted 2 so even if it's HALF as good it will be as well received. Mario Kart 7 will be as expected, fantastic. So, this brings us to Generations. The Sonic series gets no mercy, just about everybody is incredibly harsh towards the series (both critics, casuals and fan-base alike), if there is the slightest bit wrong with a Sonic game, it's highlighted with Neon lights and then flashed across the globe by a beautiful nit-picking Firework display of minor blemishes that tarnish the game for the rest of the eternity. Over-exaggeration? No, this is under-exaggeration.
Celebrating an idol like Sonic's 20th anniversary needs to be special, not only for the series sake but also for the Fan-base which is rabid on this game being as good as the old days. Just like they were for Sonic 4, and just how they were left seething by Dimps ultimate outcome. Even though the game sold more than a million copies, the Fan base calls the game a sham and it's a crime for it to share numeracy with the other Mega-Drive/Genesis titles. I'll admit, Sonic 4 wasn't fantastic but it was fun. Does it deserve to be on the same pedistool as the 90s titles? Hells to the no. The fans have a right to be angry in that aspect but with Generations...it's strange to say the least. I've played the demo of Generations and I loved it, incredibly well detailed and the gameplay was pretty great. I wanted more, I wanted to see modern Sonic in action. So, I went online to see how awesome everyone else thought it was. To my surprise the majority found it not very awesome at all. Rage threads everywhere on the official Sonic board, people insisting it's going to be another flop, I was astounded. I've played every Sonic game to date and I find Generations not only competent but really, really good. Seems fitting from what I've played, to celebrate Sonic's 20th. The other casual Sonic gamers seem to think this too, after consulting my friends list and talking to in real-life friends, they too, found it to be good. Its very confusing that the fan-base do not have this view.
So, we find out about new Zones that include City Escape and Chemical Plant zone. The gameplay looks awesome, something I did notice was the music for Chemical Plant was virtually the same as the Mega-Drive game. I had a hunch, that this would get magnified and sure as hell it does. After all the stellar music we've heard thus far, that doesn't matter now, there is a single bad track. Just as Dimps fantastic work for The Sonic series was washed away by the anti-Christ Sonic 4. This game, without even being out, appears to be splitting the gamers, wouldn't be a Sonic title without drama though.
So, why is Sonic Generations the most important game of November? The very well-being of an esteem game series depends on it. This celebration of Sonic needs to be fantastic, not just good, but fantastic. It's going to be under some very harsh criteria come November, from Critics and Fans (well, the hardcore over-analyzing fans.) so no sympathy is going to be drawn out. Meanwhile, i'm Sure MW3 has it's review scores already decided. That's just life, Sonic Generations shouldn't try to hard to be the best come November, but it should be the best Sonic game we've seen in a long time. For me, that's enough.
